Minnow at the Galley Ho Awarded Snail of Approval
Minnow is a pescatarian focused dining experience in a throwback setting that recalls an older restaurant, The Gallery Ho, that was a long time local North Fork waterfront favorite. Owner Andrea Tese embarked on preserving and reimagining this landmark several years ago which because of its adjacency to a public dock in New Suffolk is drawing the South Fork and Peconic Bay community who prefer to travel by boat to enjoy their dining experience.
Minnow is dedicated to transparency and traceability of all the seafood they serve and encourages questions about the seafood sources and choices. Almost all the fish that is served is local and is caught by Minnow itself or sustainably caught by local fishermen. The catch of the day does change daily, as it is governed by what fish is running and caught. Oysters are sourced from their next door neighbor Peeko Oysters. Andrea is outspoken about common fishing practices that cause needless waste and suffering. She estimates that one to two billion pounds of fish are thrown overboard dead or dying by fishing practices that use nets or dredges. Minnow will not contract with anyone who uses nets or dredges. She is proud to state on her menu that her products are local line caught and organic.
Minnow has their own pound trap right in Peconic Bay. This is one of the most humane way of catching fish. The fish are funneled into a pound where they swim until the desired ones are scooped out by hand and the rest are freed. No waste, no unnecessary deaths and the freshest fish for customers. Her partner, John goes to the trap at 4:30 am, scoops and brings the fish to Jermaine in Greenport who filets the catch. The fish are brought back to Minnow where any tiny bones are removed by tweezers. Customers can eat some-day caught the freshest in town.
Andrea is a very proud member of Smart Catch and follows their principles exactly. Andrea spent her summers in and on the Bay. She is an avid fisher- and water-woman, passionate about marine conservation.
We applaud the team at Minnow at Galley Ho who have brought more sustainable dining-on-aquaculture practices to the East End.
