Support State’s GMO Labeling Bill

Two bills currently before the New York State Legislature would require labeling of GMO foods (foods produced from genetically modified organisms). The right to know where the food we are buying comes from is an issue that should concern us all.

Senate bill #S3835. Assembly bill #A3525 are scheduled for a vote on June 20. Each provides for the labeling of food or food products that contain a genetically modified material or that are produced with a genetically modified material. Kenneth LaValle, our East End’s State Senator is the State Senate sponsor. Contact Senator LaValle, your Assembly Member and as many legislators as possible,even in other districts. A majority of 65 legislators is needed to pass the bill.

Food Revolution Day Celebration, May 17

Slow Food East End, together with the Edible School Garden Group of the East End, will answer celebrity chef Jaime Oliver’s call to join a national “Food Revolution Day” Friday, May 17. Farmer Frank, a new East End farmer who started Bhumi Farm in Amagansett this season, is Jaime Oliver’s Long Island ‘ambassador’ for the event is assisting us with event.

Our activities will take place at Bridgehampton School Greenhouse, 2685 Montauk Highway, 5 to 7 pm.

We will share a potluck supper so please bring a fresh, local entrée, side dish or dessert for 6-8 people to share.

During the event, three local chefs will be on hand to demonstrating how to prepare delicious and nutritious food:

Nadia Ernestus (Hampton’s Health Coach);

Bryan Futerman (Chef and owner of Foody’s in Watermill) ;

Bhavani Jaroff (Slow Food Huntington; Natural Foods Chef, Educator, Radio Host, and Food Activist)

The Bridge Marimba Band will accompany the festivities.

What is Food Revolution Day?

Food Revolution Day is a global day of action for people to make a stand for good food and essential cooking skills. It’s a chance for people to come together within their homes, schools, workplaces and communities to cook and share their kitchen skills, food knowledge and resources. Board of Regents Representative to Attend Edible School Gardens Showcase in Southold

David Gamberg, Superintendent of the Southold Union Free School District has invited school garden representatives from around the east end to showcase highlights of their school garden activities at an Expo on May 16, from 11 am to 1 pm on the Southold School grounds. Rogers Tilles, a member of the New York State Board of Regents will attend “to bear witness to how gardens programs are developing lifelong habits of the mind for the children of our schools,” according to Mr. Gamberg.

Persons wishing to participate on behalf of their schools should information the Southold School by calling 765-5400 no later than May 8.

Edible East End Food Truck Derby, April 20 at Tanger

Edible East End Magazine will sponsor a “Food Truck Derby” at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead on Saturday, April 20 from Noon to 5 pm.

Vendors serving everything from hibachi shrimp and local fish tacos to Italian pastries will be on hand, including Long Island Oyster Company, North Fork Table and Inn, Morris Grilled Cheese, Peconic Bay Winery, True Believer Cider, Hampton Coffee Company, Korilla BBQ, Coolhaus, and Van Leeuwan Ice Cream.

The “Derby” will be part of Tangers Great Taste, Great Style Home & Garden Weekend, Thurs. through Sat. from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m, and Sun. from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The weekend will also include sales on spring items in selected shops, and a parking lot sale of outdoor furniture.

Edible School Garden Group to Meet April 24th

The Edible School Garden Group will meet on Wednesday, April 24th at Southold School from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Southold will tell us all about their upcoming visit from a member of the Board of Regents, who is coming to see how the school garden is incorporated into the school curriculum. We are hoping that our Edible School Garden curriculum will be ready for presentation.
